Be your own success story

I did a research on how American billionaire Warren Buffet built his business empire thinking that I could impart some tips that might be useful for those who want to go into business. My initial idea, which I had formed from my random readings about Buffet, was that he was not born into business but has grown his money from investing on stocks. I was wrong.

He was cut into business. Buffet, the second of three children of US Representative Howard Buffet, had displayed interest in making money even in his childhood, going door-to-door to sell chewing gum, Coca Cola or weekly magazines. In high school, he made money delivering newspapers, selling golf balls and stamps, among others. In 1945, in his sophomore year, Buffet and a friend purchased for $25 a used pinball machine which they placed in a local barber shop. Within months, they had put more machines in other barber shops.

When he entered college in 1947, he went to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, staying there for two years before moving to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he graduated at age 19 with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. After his graduate studies, Buffet went to the Columbia Business School when he learned that Benjamin Graham and David Dodd, both well-know securities analysts, were teaching there.

As the cliche goes, the rest was history. He became a well-known investor. For the purpose of this blog, I don't have to trace his money trail. It's enough to know that he was born to be a businessman. So, if Buffet's success story is a matter of fate, what lessons can we learn from it? One is that he started with a mindset to be in business and, second, he has a unique story that cannot be duplicated. He is his own success story.

We are own success stories. All of us have different personalities and circumstances in life. There is no point wishing to be like Buffet or anybody else. We cannot duplicate the success of other people. We cannot retrace the paths they trod, we can only tread our own path. What we can do is to acquire a positive mindset to pursue what we want to achieve.

There are people who were not born into business but became successful businessmen in the later part of their lives. One of them is the Catholic preacher Bo Sanchez. I subscribe to his emails and the way I understand it from some of his articles, it started with an awareness that he could help people more if he became financially well-off himself.

Aside from his spiritual missions, Sanchez is running The Truly Rich Club to help people who want to grow rich both in their spiritual and financial lives. Like Buffet, Bo Sanchez is his own success story that we cannot duplicate. The common lesson that we can get from them is that we have to will what we want to do and do it. Inaction is not an option.

Do you want to go into business? Be your own success story. Pursue the dream. All successes start with a dream and the will to pursue it. We cannot dream of earning from blogging without creating our own blogs and just keep on posting short comments on Facebook to show our intelligence -- or lack of it.

Even those who dream of winning from lotto have to bet.One would be extremely lucky if he wins in a lotto from a lost ticket he found on the street or elsewhere. In that case, he will be his own rare success story that no one can hope to duplicate.
